Cinco de Mayo is a celebration of the Battle of Puebla (Batalla de Puebla) against the French on May 5 1862 (5 de Mayo). Mexico’s true Independence Day (Dia de Independencia) is actually September 16 (dieciséis de septiembre) when Mexico broke away from the rule of Spain in 1810 and is the most important national patriotic holiday in Mexico. Read the article below for more information. In the United States, Cinco de Mayo is a big Mexican party (Fiestas including piñatas, ballet folklórico and mariachi) to honor ancestry and pride where a culture blends both Mexican and American roots. Big business has advertised and promoted this celebration where much cerveza such as Corona, Dos Equis (XX), Modelo, Pacifico, Tecate and Sol is imported into the US. With tacos, enchiladas, fajitas, guacamole and queso a lot of Margaritas with tequila is consumed. WOW, we just love May 5th every year in New York City!!!
